A recent no-cooling service call in Ancaster turned into a furnace replacement after we found that the problem wasn't the outdoor air conditioner — it was a failed ECM blower motor inside the furnace.
The existing furnace was approximately 21 years old, and replacing the ECM blower motor would have cost more than $1,500. After considering the age of the equipment and the cost of the repair, the homeowner decided to replace the old furnace with a new Lennox two-stage 96% high-efficiency furnace.
No Cooling — But the AC Wasn't the Problem
When a home isn't cooling, it's easy to assume something has gone wrong with the air conditioner. But the furnace and AC work together during the cooling season.
The outdoor AC unit removes heat from the refrigerant, while the furnace blower moves indoor air across the evaporator coil and distributes the cooled air throughout the home.
During our diagnosis, we found that the ECM blower motor in the furnace had failed. Without the blower operating properly, the system couldn't circulate conditioned air through the ductwork.
This is why proper diagnosis is important before replacing AC components or assuming the outdoor unit is responsible for a no-cooling problem.
A $1,500+ Repair on a 21-Year-Old Furnace
Replacing the failed ECM blower motor would have cost more than $1,500.
If the furnace had been relatively new and otherwise in good condition, replacing the motor could have been a reasonable repair. In this case, however, the furnace was already approximately 21 years old.
Even after investing more than $1,500 in a new blower motor, the homeowner would still have a 21-year-old heating system with other original components continuing to age.
We explained the repair and replacement options so the homeowner could decide which approach made the most sense.
Considering the age of the furnace and the cost of the repair, the homeowner chose replacement.
Before: The Original 21-Year-Old Furnace

The original furnace had provided many years of service, but the failed ECM blower motor created a major repair decision.
There was another consideration as well: the existing furnace used older ABS venting.
With the installation of the new high-efficiency furnace, the old venting needed to be replaced with approved PVC venting that meets the requirements for the new system.
Installing a Lennox Two-Stage 96% High-Efficiency Furnace
The old furnace was removed and replaced with a new Lennox two-stage 96% high-efficiency furnace.
A two-stage furnace can operate at a lower heating output during milder weather and switch to higher output when the home requires more heat. This can provide more consistent indoor temperatures and quieter operation compared with a traditional single-stage system.
As part of the installation, we also updated the venting from the existing ABS to approved PVC and completed the necessary gas, electrical, condensate and ductwork connections.
Once the installation was complete, the new furnace was started, tested and checked for proper operation.
After: New Lennox High-Efficiency Furnace
The finished installation gives the homeowner a modern high-efficiency heating system instead of investing more than $1,500 into a major repair on the original 21-year-old furnace.
The new Lennox furnace comes with a 10-year parts warranty, subject to applicable manufacturer registration and warranty requirements.
AirPro Heating & Cooling also provides a 1-year labour warranty on all newly installed equipment.
When Does Furnace Replacement Make More Sense Than Repair?
Not every expensive furnace repair means the equipment should be replaced.
A failed blower motor on a newer furnace may be well worth repairing. But as equipment gets older, it becomes important to consider more than the cost of the immediate repair.
Furnace age, overall condition, repair cost, previous problems and the possibility of future component failures should all be considered.
In this Ancaster home, the combination of a 21-year-old furnace and a $1,500+ ECM blower motor repair made replacement the homeowner's preferred long-term option.
