No Heat in Ancaster: Burned ECM Blower Motor Leads to Furnace Replacement

A homeowner in Ancaster contacted AirPro Heating & Cooling after their furnace stopped heating and they noticed a burning smell coming from the furnace.
Because a burning smell can indicate an electrical or motor problem, we inspected the system to determine what had failed and whether the furnace could be safely repaired.
Furnace Inspection and Diagnosis
The existing system was a Carrier furnace approximately 13 years old, with a heating capacity of 100,000 BTU.
During our inspection, we traced the problem to the ECM blower motor. The blower motor had failed and was producing the burning smell reported by the homeowner.
The blower is an essential part of a forced-air heating system. Even when the burners and other furnace components are operating properly, a failed blower motor prevents the furnace from circulating heated air through the home.
A burning or electrical smell from a furnace should not be ignored. If you notice an unusual smell, noise, or the furnace suddenly stops heating, it is a good idea to shut the system down and have it inspected before continuing to operate it.
Repair the ECM Motor or Replace the Furnace?
In this particular case, replacing the ECM blower motor would have been a significant repair, estimated at more than $1,500.
The furnace was approximately 13 years old, so we discussed both options with the homeowner: replacing the failed blower motor and keeping the existing furnace, or putting that repair cost toward a new furnace.
There isn't one answer that applies to every furnace. The age and overall condition of the equipment, the cost of the failed component, and the homeowner's plans for the property should all be considered.
After reviewing the options, the homeowner decided that furnace replacement made more sense than investing in the ECM motor repair.

New Furnace Installation in Ancaster
We removed the old Carrier furnace and installed a new KeepRite furnace.
The new furnace was properly connected to the existing ductwork, gas line, venting, electrical system, thermostat controls, and condensate drainage.
After installation, we tested the furnace through a complete heating cycle to confirm proper ignition, blower operation, airflow, and heating performance.
The homeowner now has a reliable heating system without having to invest more than $1,500 into a major repair on the older furnace.
When Does Furnace Replacement Make Sense?
A failed blower motor does not automatically mean that a furnace needs to be replaced. On a newer furnace in otherwise good condition, repairing the motor may be the best option.
However, when a furnace is getting older and requires an expensive component such as an ECM blower motor, it can be worth comparing the repair cost with the cost and benefits of replacement.
At AirPro Heating & Cooling, we diagnose the problem first and explain the available options so homeowners can decide whether furnace repair or replacement makes the most sense for their situation.
